When a large steel space frame roof leaks, attention often turns to the structure. In most cases the structure is not the cause. A space frame carries load; the waterproofing is a separate system of panels, fasteners, flashing, and drainage laid over it. The two behave differently, and confusing them sends maintenance in the wrong direction. The first useful distinction is simple: a structural problem and a waterproofing problem are not the same thing, and each has its own causes and its own inspection method.

Because the roof covering sits directly on the frame, a leak is often noticed near a member or node, which makes it tempting to blame the structure. But a space frame is designed to carry load, not to keep water out; the watertightness comes from the roofing layers above it. Keeping that split clear is the foundation of every correct diagnosis.

What Actually Causes Leakage

Roof leaks on space frame buildings trace back to a small set of roofing-system causes:

  • Panel joint leakage — where adjoining panels meet, inadequate overlap or a failed seam lets water through.
  • Fastener leakage — a fixing whose washer or seal has failed becomes a direct path for water.

Detail design matters as much as material choice: a well-detailed flashing, a properly lapped panel, and a correctly sized gutter all reduce the chance of leaks before the building is even handed over.

Inspection and Maintenance
